KEEP WORKING, sacrifice some stuff such as latest smartphones, fancy new cars, dining out, shop at discount stores, build up a bit of credit (takes a couple years), show a steady wage for a few years, buy a duplex, live in one side, let the other side pay your mortgage, KEEP WORKING the entire time, you will be amazed how quickly you can start saving money when you take large bills out of the equation such as rent/mortgage.  

I don't like condo's because of the fees and power players wanting to sit on the boards.A condo sitting for 2 years is a long time.

Many are skilled at dodging bill collectors, and hence the frequency of default judgments for landlords where tenants never show up.

Perhaps @Bill S. could shed a little more light on the local tenancy law.We have wording in our leases that tenants are required to maintain the premises at a temperature of at lease 12C (~55F) even when they are not present.  

Honestly, our income and our bills are such that it won't take a tremendous amount of passive income to replace our current income and keep us living at the level we're at now, which, while not great, isn't horrible, either.

And never discount the power of google - I find a lot of usable information and contracts and forms by a simple google search.  

They take care of all repairs except the infrastructure on your land, and hopefully individually metered for direct billing.
