You can find out their hobbies, the groups they belong to, the pets they have, the music they like, the friends they hang out with.

My lease blantaly says "no cats or pets" however because it didn't seem to cause any issue I let it slide.

I know you cant reject someone for having a child but children can cause alot of damage.Would you rather have a small child in the house and worrying about them drawing all over the walls and ruining the floors and other things or would you take a pet?

It is not a smoke but something different, may be smell from pet or something.
