If others have different experience that's fine, but i will not brake it again. 

If you are going to do any job, having the right tools sure makes it easier.closest I came to dying on a machine that moved.. including flying my own plane.. driving my own boat.. driving cars. etc etc.was the day I decided to mow our office lawn.. there was an old riding mower in the back .. normally we hire this stuff out of course.but I hop on that and back yard was going good then I decide to go out front and now I am heading for the street trying to figure out how to stop the thing I end up in the middles of the street with a car 3  inchs from me that braked and skidded to a stop..

I think the main thing he needs is someone who will counsel him and put the brakes on any foolish ideas.

A deer runs out, "holly-hell", you hit the brakes, "POW" the car is massively changed, to the lessor, in the blink of an eye.

I did replace brakes after driving it about 10,000 miles, mainly because I was using the truck to tow a chipper... so more preventative maintenance than anything.

I've put gas, oil, tires, brakes, windshield wipers, air filters and 2 new headlight bulbs in it.

First factor is that I had a really big ticket item come up out of the blue and wanted to pump the brakes after that happened (had to get creative to absorb the cost). 

I do have some renovations I would like to do later on and if I can secure a low interest HELOC right now before the market starts to pump the brakes a little bit then I don't see why not?
