Essentially it is set up as a separate apartment - fridge, stove, microwave, toilet, stand-up shower.We moved to the second floor apartment, and to avoid dealing with illegal apartment issues with the basement, we capped the gas line and removed the stove and rented the apartment out to a friend as a first floor/basement duplex on a single lease.  

See if you can get them ready to go, offgrid (solar, composting toilets), might expand the market!

After placing food coloring in the upstairs toilet it appears there is a leak.

I've even taken the tank from a cracked toilet and replace a cracked tank on a different toilet.

I would check to see if you have a leaky toilet.
