I have no substantive advice on the matter, but I do love reading these respectful debates from both sides of the argument - for the sake of mental aerobics - where the objective is to find the most cost-effective solution to increase efficiency in an increasingly efficient "inefficient market" Here's another idea to the OP - get a more fuel efficient car to go see property, so it costs you $13, not $15!

If that concerns your investors they should talk to an international tax lawyer, but a possible solution (this is not a tax or a legal advice, just my experience) is that they should create a domestic (Rumanian) entity that in turn will be the one you will partner with in the US.

Their solution was to raise the down payment to 3.5 , increase the upfront fee, and then hit you with insurance they keep making go up higher and higher.
