You'd only likely encounter any issue if you a) have a Tesla car loan on your credit report or b) your son doesn't pay for the house, and you don't pay for the house and they have to file for repossession.

I'm curious,  what type of scams are you seeing? 

Unfortunately, this process won't give you any clues into the smoothness of their loan process from origination to closing, but at least would let you weed out a scam or a company that may pull a bait and switch on you a few days before closing.First, you can ask what name they close loans under, and then do a public records search in your market (if they have closed any in your market) online. 

This is concerning to me because in the 10 years I have had rentals I've never encountered a tenant like this.

(Such as him trying to scam me for the $550 saying I have it).

Successful landlords and PMs do not allow themselves to be bullied or coerced by deadbeat tenants who damage their property and violate their lease.If you continue to own rental property, this type of situation will occur again at some point, and if you don't stick to your guns, you will continue to be taken advantage of, and you'll continue to lose money.The first few times you encounter a situation like this, it is is stressful, yes.

This sounds like a total scam to me.
