I would say that you have a lot of opportunities for investing @Randall Alan explained well your financial strategies.With respect to what strategies to choose is depending on what you are willing to learn.STR depending the area is always a good strategy though you have to understand that is hospitality no real estate.Outside it will depend on the country and your knowledge.

We ultimately feel like this shouldn't be our financial burden.

The financial decisions are rough; if you can't mid term it or long term it and wait out appreciation a bit then its probably best to cut your losses.  

We want to utilize our income to set us up for financial success as we get older and for generational wealth for our kids. 

@Ryan BiankowskiYou absolutely can.Research your market, come up with a flip strategy (what type of house you will want to purchase, how you plan on finding this property, what area you want to purchase, how you will come up with financing), find the property that fits this strategy, secure the financing, and close on the deal.

One influencing factor is city planning and transportation.
