Eric, the best piece of advice I can give to someone looking for software is to ask for your sales rep to show you a live demo and ask questions that are relevant to your business model.

Personally I'd prefer a note secured by a mortgage on a physical piece of real estate over an unsecured note (assuming the strength of the payor was equal in both situations).  

I know bits and pieces about general construction and can do some of my own work on any renovations that will need to be done.
