Typically, when I'm counseling with an out of state client that is living in a higher cost of living area - the client is usually better off to house hack in an expensive market rather than buying RE in a lower cost of living area unless there is a lot of excess capital to work with.If you have any questions - feel free to reach out as I am happy to chat.

They were talking about paint colors and how things made them feel and I was talking about cost per sq foot and the value of the property, so there was a disconnect in how we perceived the buying process. 

It'll be awkward and may feel like you don't belong but in my experience everyone is happy to share what knowledge they can and possibly give you that mentorship you're looking for.
