Fire has told me before if doing a pit it needs to be way out from the building or patio because of wind movement can carry a flame and attach to the fence or building.Hope it helps some.

if the house were heated with a heat pump and it gets cold , the emergency heat kicks in , its resistance heat , same as electric baseboard .
