Encouragingly, the police have been a visible presence. 

The police will not go there even if a neighbor calls and says people are breaking in wearing jackets that say "copper thief" on them.

Just be thankful you didn't have commercial property in a place where peaceful people were allowed to blow off some steam and to be heard where somehow your building got burned without whatever special insurance covers riots at a place where the police won't go. 

Fast forward a few months, and the police kicked down our front door in a drug raid.

If someone overstays, I would assume they could call the police to remove them as a trespasser.

There were wild parties nearly every night; windows were broken; the police were there every day.

Did they call the police or did the police raid the house?

The attack happened while the police were inside the condo writing their report!

If you happen to use it for a while in one home you own in your personal name, there is not any IRS police that will be checking your other homes for that item - you are fine there.
