The first thing I would want to do is leave a negative review, but I can see the rental sites now allowing you to leave a review on a cancelled booking, because some hosts may have legitimate reasons to cancel.

The last I checked, NC residents could not lend through these venues because of the series of cease and desist orders (11/2008), class action suits, SEC violations, etc.
