Especially considering the commute time to those larger cities (30 minutes) as well as the proximity to one of the largest US Army bases in the world (Fort Bragg, NC). 

Whenever you are buying a property long distance you should do a few things to ensure it's as smooth as possible.Don't buy in the roughest neighborhood in the urban core.

"Long Distance Real Estate Investing", by David Greene is also a great book as it focuses on markets in chapter 6 and 7 according to trends and kpis in markets to look for.
