i am an avid photographer and have a strong opinion when it comes to photography. so excuse me if i come out too strong.you dont need a DSLR because you would not know how to use it. if you said something like "i have a small digital camera now, but would like to get something better", that would be different. getting one (even at $100) and using the "auto feature" is a waste.i dont like smartphone pictures (obviously), but that's better than no picturespointless to tell you what to look for when shopping for a DSLR (like actuations) because you would not use even 10% of the capability of the camera. the kit lens is ok for what you need, btw.get a small canon camera and use it instead. or nikon. they are awesome
