Once STR hit the craze people went to MTR and in some areas like STR the market is over saturated and it’s a race to the bottom of who can provide the cheapest housing.Have you considered just doing a long term rental?

I have recently decided that I must supplement my current government income through passive means so that I can set myself up for a great position to "escape the rat race" when I transition to civilian life in a few years.  

My fear is that if I get another job, I basically have no time for anything other than weekends, and will be stuck in the rat race forever, instead of building wealth.I would so appreciate your expertise and opinions.Thanks,Solomon

So I have been looking at ways to get out of the rat race ( if you have read the Rich Dad Poor Dad book then you will know exactly what I mean.
