We have had 3 parcels of land (small country town) plus the mobile home rental and had to sell all of it do to personal reasons and major home repairs on our own home.

@Angela Smith I am in Maryland  just outside the city ,  you are out of the country in Canada , a severe disadvantage .  

We moved here 4 years ago after traveling the world for a few years and falling in love with the people, wine, and food of this country. 

There were exceptions made to this all over the country, but not all that many and mostly in more expensive, brick-veneer balloon-framed homes, where the beefed-up structure helped keep the heavier walls in place and also supported the stress of the rafters holding up a heavier slate roof. 

I read that California and Florida have different rules than most of the country.

At the time fridges were very small so food was out a lot & most of them came from countries that didn't have access to one.

Now, I guess that does not preclude them from trying to collect from you, because you can sue anybody for anything in our great country, but I would not think they would have a case.I'm sure someone else with more direct experience with insurance claims will weigh in, but that's my take.
