For example, wholesaling might not make sense if you hate getting phone calls all the time.I think partnering (whether your are doing buy and holds, flips, or wholesaling) makes sense if you can partner with someone with a) more experience, b) cash, or c) a complimentary skill set.

I call this the hybrid approach, maybe investing locally in deals for your active spirit if time, skills and interest are there while balancing more difficult DIY projects out side of you area w/passive focus in niche areas like large scale value add apartment investing, mobile home parks and self storage for instance.

You can step up skills and be superintendent or foreman, it's the same as the trade but at least you don't work with hammers if the position is high enough.
