I experienced the same issue, which has been frustrating, especially since it was my first investment decision.

Unfortunately, people in the trades are often good at their trade but poor at managing their business.

I see it that your first decision is; to scale (grow), to coast (doesn't sound of interest or else you wouldn't be asking these questions, right), to exit (cash-out) or to transfer. 

This decision often comes down to a simple numbers game.

Investing does need to be approached more like a business than just a simple stock trade.
