In addition, the "buyer" is the county sheriff so in essence, I'm fighting a battle with a local cop while I'm the outsider! 

The reality is the assessments are correct, but when you do the math based on the tax rate (which in most locales has also gone up) our property taxes on our properties is up an average of over 10%…I know some will say “fight the assessments” but honestly I think some of them may be low (and truth be told I would guess less than 5% if people contest assessments).I am curious, have others started to receive their assessments - and were you in sticker shock?

The strategy that has normally worked for me is to put up a fight even if it means suing them first (before they sue you).

In my opinion, you don't have a lot of ammo to fight this battle so to speak. 

The hope is the HITS are not life threatening and you live to “fight” another day. 

It wasn't some great job with matching 401ks that put families into covered wagons just to fight native Americans... it was dream of property ownership. 

This pain is going to be either in you labor, legal fights, tenant issues, but most likely a combination of all of them.

This is my first full year with seasons owning the house…so I’m learning a lot of lessons.  5) I think to your point I simply need to fight through the summer with hopefully great bookings and knock out more of the debt.
