@Makenzi Capezza You can also double check you don't have glue residue on the wall by using a heat gun (or blowdryer to warm the location up) in a spot or two and checking to see if that's what's making the weird texture.

Some of the old mortar is crumbling and there are spots with moisture residue (photos attached below).
