I work in tech so I'm naturally gravitating towards areas that have a lot of tech workers (lots of foreign workers renting).Any ideas?

I'll echo the idea I don't think its balanced as your propose it;  you own the land and are already more involved than just as an "investor" it doesn't feel like a balance.

But as a general idea, building to rent will be less cash flow than if you bought a resale property.

I personally do not like the idea of taking a loan against my primary residence to buy investment properties.
