It's the worst press a congressperson could get to have the military not get paid, especially when you have troops in harm's way.With all that said, the DoD is supposed to be back to work on Monday, including all civilians, so it should be a mute point now.

Also, make sure you enjoy the reno/construction part otherwise you'll hate the whole process.The second house was a HUD foreclosure which wasn't inhabitable at purchase.

@Josiah ReutterJust like everyone has said previously, your VA loan is only good at first with owner occupied, but you can turn it into a rental after you have lived there for the required amount of years.For example, my husband and I were stationed at Luke AFB in the West Valley of Phoenix and we lived there for 2 years and then my husband got out of active duty and got a civilian job in Utah.

As long as you have police reports, fire report, documentation etc you have time to work out the claim (I believe 2 years even after your policy is cancelled).Secondly I would start reaching out to insurance brokers who specialize in habitational.
