I discovered the site after reading a Reddit post about an investor who had built a solid portfolio in a short time was sharing.

I'm looking at it from a "minimize expenses" perspective in order to get into the game and learn (hopefully break even)  then build from there as I've been looking for well over a year now.To complicate matters, I'm also looking for private funding to make it happen so if you're able to go the normal route, more power to you!

Not sure that an american rental / investing site is going to be much help .these type of trophy properties are usually sold through higher end brokers like Sotheby's etc .Sounds like a cool place I have to think this is an easy sale for the local brokers or other types of brokerage community in the area.. 

There are lots of resources on this site and meetups that are local to you.

There is quite literally EVERYTHING you need to know, short of actual tangible experience, on this site for someone to get started.

I searched around until I found a reverse address site (411.ca in my case) that allows me to enter a street and get the numbers for all of the houses on that street.

There are some things you can do to protect yourself, such as getting multiple estimates and sticking with contractors that are reputable (for example, I found that sites that have a rating that contractors need to maintain like Angie's List provides better contractors versus places like Craigslist where it's the wild West.).
