But, if you're analyzing lots of deals, 9% of ARV is probably going to be a lot quicker to compute than 10% of total costs (as adding up total buying, holding and selling costs typically takes a bit more time).Sorry to be pedantic, but the engineer/mathematician likes both accuracy and precision... :-)

It doesn't take a mathematician to tell you what's gonna happen when it's $25 a barrel (or $150)...In a recession, you can make money buying any company that's going to come out the other side intact and ready to go (ie, it has relatively low debt, and is healthy enough to weather the storm).
