Me personally, I wana see ceiling fans in bedrooms for function. 

You may also do a deep clean and repaint the walls and ceilings.

As a buyer, I'd almost always prefer the "touch up" or "just replace the plumbing with pex" treatment, especially if it's a pre-war home.My renters (single guys) care way more about things like the height of the shower head and how loud the ceiling fan is than what anything looks like.

Relocate the light boxes toward the ceiling to add hidden lighting accents.

Some surprises I've had in this area:Sheriff kicked door down in one house b/c they had a warrant from a previous tenantFound a gun in one house (ended up being a BB gun but looked like a 357 revolver)Had tenants leave the house, left all their stuff, and never heard from them again, after living there for only a few monthsHad a water leak in a ceiling that flooded my garage and damaged ceiling in dining areaOn the positive side, have provide safe, affordable, clean housing for some great people.

Hall bathroom had 7' ceiling, we opened it up to a 10' , located toilet to end, relocated linen closet behind door, to add vanity.          

Some leaky faucets , slow drains , a broken window , a broken screen door, missing damaged facia , Eve's and saufet .wood decay around front door , a ceiling fan that doesn't work , ac with water filling drain pan , crack in garage ceiling , 1 cracked floor tile, 1 double tapped breaker , and a missing attic inspection cover .

In other words, we can't just keep raising the debt ceiling forever without treasury investors eventually taking it on the chin, but as of yet this is the plan for the future.

Once you have knocked down what is above the roof and working in the attic, you can no longer use a full size sledge hammer if you like having ceilings. 

The reason being is in NYS in order to count square foot in a house the ceiling has to be at least 7 feet.
