You may need to purchase an $8-$10 test meter from your local hardware store (one that plugs into outlets to verify whether voltage is present or not) and maybe a voltage tester as well.

The fire was contained to the upper cabinets and about 1/4 of the ceiling drywall in the small kitchen.I was still naïve but even back then things looked funny; there were no burn marks around the one outlet closest to the fire.

Wow....Congrats on getting it done so cheap and good luck with the house.Just for future reference, my wife and I needed a fridge for ourselves and 2 weeks ago and we went to a sears outlet and got a brand new fridge (scratch and dent and nothing fancy but still had the plastic inside) for $345.

You should speak to a CPA as @Taylor L. mentioned as they would be your best resource but you can also stay current by reading financial blogs, listening to podcasts etc when tax code changes are about to take effect those outlets usually cover it and break down the changes in great detail.
