Just go to any hardware store and it should be near the plumbing. https://www.amazon.com/Teflon-Thread-Seal-Tape-EDIT: You just wrap the tape around the male threaded end about 4-5 times.

No trees are in the area, it just might have leaky wax seals or something (house built in 1972).But if they had found a tampon or several, or something jammed in there, how would I break the news that they were going to have to pay for that?

As long as the pipe isn't all hacked up they seal perfectly.They work on copper, PEX or CPVC and cost around $9.
