The entrances you need to know about are the West entrance (in the city of Joshua Tree) and the North entrance (in the city of 29 Palms).

I finally settled on a design that basically allowed us to live on the first floor, have one apartment on the second floor (separate entrance), and a second apartment over a detached three car garage.

I did not want to share spaces so I found a home with a separate entrance to the basement so that the top band bottom units are completely separated and can function like a duplex. 

The upstairs and downstairs of the house are completely separate with separate entrances.

Our intention was to find a BRRRR property that we could move into (so we only had to put 5% down) had a separate entrance to the basement (for a mother in law), and something we could put sweat equity into.
