Yes, my wife and I house hack now, but our next one will be a du-triplex so we can have some privacy.

One caveat is that I was still hoping to keep it free for 50-75% of the time, in order not to limit my family's privacy too much, and still be able to host relatives and friends that happen to be around.

Also, in the city I reside in, 2nd story ADUs are very controversial due to privacy concerns and so the city has imposed height & size restrictions, prohibited balconies & decks, restricted location of exterior stairs, requiring opaque windows and the like.To start, I would suggest an architect who has experience with ADUs who is familiar with the variances of your jurisdiction.Good luck!

Renting rooms in a SFH is an option but I'd ideally want a set up where I can preserve my privacy! 

Or, if the new ADU could only be accessed by walking right by the window of every bedroom in the house, that might make things weird..but, if the new bedroom/ADU would be off on its own with plenty of privacy, separate from most traffic, then that could work out great...
