My wife and I had some hard conversations and have eliminated all consumer debt and have stayed debt free.Some options for you after you and your wife are on the same page - depending on the amount of debt, you can sell the car you mentioned, buy a cheaper car or use a bike/public transportation/walk and use the proceeds from that sale to get out of debt.

Just outside of the city, public transport is easily accessible, values make sense, 1% rule is no problem (though taxes are relatively high, so work that in), and courts are balanced from my experience.

The value I saw was that the square footage was under-reported since the previous owner had enclosed the breezeway and attached garage, turning it into a 1/1 apartment and the large detached 2 car garage also has an efficiency built in the rear portion.
