Can I write off my entire lumber bill as an expense or is that included in the larger asset that then gets depreciated? 

Personally, I would not be excited if one of my neighbors plopped a bunch of storage sheds on their front yard and people were coming and going to unload their goods. 

If that's the lay of the land, then unload the risk, take the education, and keep the winner, even if it leaves you in the hole.
