Definitely consider installing even fake security cameras, they will help to deter unwanted visitors.

my suggestion is to find a metro area and pound for infill lots ahead of builders and flip lots.. 

In our area, our animal shelters are severely overpopulated, and the local pound has an intake waiting list of 70+ dogs at any given time.
