If the studs are all plumb and in plane, furring strips work great.  

You may find that plan A & B swap places as you work with a property or that plan E or F or G pop out of nowhere and land on your plate (selling as a Rent-to-own, selling a life estate, super-long leases, sale with right-of-first-refusal).An owner rent-back is another option (I've done my first one this year - we'll see how it goes).

Planed terminations should never cause a vacancy.Some landlords could care less about late payments as they do not depend on the income to cover bills but in this case when a PM gives notice for a late an repeat late payment should have resulted in a eviction.

I agree you should pick your battles even for ridiculous comments.You could propose fastening some vertical battens every 8" o.c. or so to accent the plane appearance but it adds more potential paths for water to get in.
