I think you should just stick with neutral/light colors like beige, baby blue and off-white.

At this point you might have to get a neutral third party to unwind this thing as it sounds like both sides could have handled things differently.

The only other thing that I have tried it on besides smoke is cat pee (which did not work at all by the way... ended up having to paint all the floors with oil based primer for that).I wouldn't get my hopes up on it neutralizing 50 years of damage though.

I go to a store like Hobby lobby and buy few neutral pieces to go on the wall in the living room and dining room.

At the most, it is a neutral gesture.
