These tanks, and direct vent gas furnaces/boilers, can be plumbed directly through the side of the building (foundation wall, sill plate, etc) provide the exhaust exists the required distance from an operable window, door, or other air intake.From an energy efficiency stand-point, direct vented fixtures are preferable as they are not taking their supply of combustion air from the conditioned space of the building (are you have already heated), causing colder, external air to be drawn into the building.Additionally, as Pat has pointed out, direct vented fixtures reduce the risk of natural gas/propane or CO being drawn back into the conditioned space of the home.

@Andrew Holmes  The city of Chicago uses code enforcement to ensure absentee landlords and non performing property managers are not dragging down blocks and neighborhoods especially in tougher areas where there are already plenty of external factors working against a community.

If in the event you do have a very high external risk profile that might attract a real lawsuit (a drug addled teenager driver) then acquire the level of umbrella insurance commensurate with your real risk (not phantom risk from some imagery "predator" instilled in your mind from a group scare monger selling you an LLC template).I would go even one step further and say an LLC in practical effect may actually INCREASE your risk profile as it could easily lull you into a state of complacency running your operation both in a careless and reckless manner.
