There are various ways to do it like sectioning off part of the existing sq footage to convert into a bedroom (i.e. dining room, den, or office).

Also added a backsplash and built a soffit for the cabinets, and drywalled/textured the dining room. 

I wouldn’t completely remove the wall between kitchen/dining area and the living room.
