The 30 day move out notice should suffice but you will have to check with the local laws.

If you charge a per day rate it gets more complicated and you run the risk of potentially breaking laws in some places about late fees.

What are some best practices that folks enforce on guests when being pet friendly?

Or are the landlord laws simply too draconian in California to warrant the risk? 

This may or may not apply, but there is a concept in the law that says if a contract is unclear that is should be interpreted in favor of the party that did not draft/initiate it.
