As for the contractors prices , I like to get at least 3 but if it's a house you haven't bought yet and time is a issue then call a couple drywall guys and ask for a best guess then same with painter ..ect..

If you can get a good painter/ drywall finisher to work for you and teach you for a week, you will learn so much from these guys just by hiring someone really good for a week or so.

I know you're looking for contractors, and perhaps you may only be looking for builders rather than painters.

I am wanting to freshen up the outside and need painters for the exterior of the house.

Hard to be scared when you're lining up painters, flooring guys, window shopping at Tile stores, etc. 

I'm also often surprised at how much more painters will do besides paint.

What I have found success in is getting your network of your own contractors (flooring guys, carpenters, demo crew, painter etc.) and as your walking through the property send them pictures of the job and ask what they ruffly think it would cost.
