I just think there is so much more that you can do with that capital, I mean I don't know your goals but there are tons of places you can buy right now (Frederick, Laurel, Baltimore (Canton and Federal Hill), Columbia, Silver Spring) where you can buy for half the prices of DC and create cash flow or equity or whatever it is that you want. 

Would you say that somewhere like Columbia Heights, Eckington, Le Droit Park would be doable with my budget?

I'm in Salisbury, MO and investing in the surrounding area and eventually looking to tap into the Columbia market.

Since you are from Columbia, you might have access to competitive loan programs along with the ability to perform due diligence and build a team you can trust while living in the states.

At least that was my experience buying selling and loaning money in British Columbia.
