We normally demo the interior of old bungalows down to the studs.  

if you come across wood panelling in the basement...when a standard is nice drywall finish ...would you install 1/4 drywall on top of the panelling or rather demo it and start with the regular drywall ?

ok, demo only on 3000 sq. ft including floors and you are looking at about two 40 yard dumpsters full plus labor to do so.

I want to buy half of a block (5 houses) with a good street front, demo all the SFHs, re-zone the land, then build my 75-150 apartments.

They also tend to need replacement often, people put wet and gooey things in them.I prefer recessed, but I just bought a surface mount for an apartment in an old building because it has plaster walls and I don't want to deal with demoing any more of that plaster.I have not tried higher end cabinets, but I never buy the cheapest one available, either.
