It's expensive and the odour is most strong (a well ventilated area is a must), but being alcohol-based, it dries quickly and the odour dissipates in short order.The fact that it dries so quickly is what gives the good coverage.I just primed an old - previously varnished - linen last week ... one coat, no issues.

On all of the ones I've dealt with, you can slide the magnets out and try to clean the magnets and the metal up with denatured alcohol.
