We are supposed to closing in 8 days on a duplex in South Carolina and I just found out that the previous (deceased) owner had joint ownership on title of property at some point.    

It serves two purposes, it allows for a water proof cover for the joint & gives you a better caulked finish for the shower door frame.I also always add a 2x4 behind the joint to ensure a good solid screw anchor for the shower door framing.Tough to see but it blends in nicely & the PVC wraps around the corner on this one.
