Right now, a pickup is an absolute necessity for my company. 

Best strategy is to pay off all credit cards, use them for only necessities, pay them off 100% each month.

They deliberately chose not to pay rent and sound like they are using the whole baby thing as an excuse to avoid basis necessities.

Since they most likely never bought renters insurance to cover their personal possessions, that is their problem. but renters insurance takes away from the necessities of life .. like booze Newport’s and lotto tickets  

Checkbook control is definitely nice, and for many investment strategies, almost a necessity. 

It would have cost more if I hadn't done much of the work myself (out of necessity, I did not plan on doing any labor). 

I collect cash .( scary to most on here) in person for the reasons you mentioned and I try to do it promptly after the first before they spend it on necessities such as Newport’s  old Milwaukee and  lotto tickets !

Skinny fire is earning your basic necessities passively and will vary by person and location.
