Bottom line, for someone you age the sky is the limit when it comes to this sort of out of the box thinking.

Most of the podcast guests had $100k to pull out their retirement or like Brandon, started house hacking at a young age.

However, we would like to build one home for our aging mother and one for ourselves.

Unfortunately, in April of 2023 my aging parents' health went in a rough direction (father Alzheimer's/dementia, mom immobility) so I had to "move" back to Dallas, to care for them and also help them with their own bills.

For all of them... what are the age of the systems (roof, a/c, pool equipment, water heater etc.

Not everyone optimizes their life for financial efficiency and long term wealth, especially once people reach a certain age in life and values change. 

The close comp will be newer homes nearby: brand new 3/2 house with similar size (but 2000 sf tiny lot) is sold at $520k, rent $2800-2900; similar aged home with outdated interior is the area is rent at $2500-2600.
