@colleen (not sure why the @ is not working) - i always thought fertilizer promotes stronger roots and the spring gets rid of most of the weeds.maybe i'm going overkill with this though. i've been wrong before. and, yeah, the $22 it cost me in fertilizer affects the return a little.that's why i posted it here on good ol' BP!

I'd probably have them topped just in case of a big storm. check the roots to see if their growing into the foundation or septic, If so, then I would have the trees removed.

We called the 24*7 plumbing and snaked the line immediately and later the next morning took care of changing the entire plumbing line upto the mainline for 5000$ due to roots in the pipe.The tenant in the house says about 1-2 glasses of water flowed from under the toilet into the bathroom and onto the bedroom carpet.
