Just compare your numbers and do what you are comfortable with, but it is doable. 

I know it is in many parts of the city and there seems to be few neighborhoods where $900 is not doable, but again until I can speak with someone who let's me know they're getting it consistently I'm not 100% certain that's the number here.    

If you're starting from scratch in an area it will be harder but still very do-able.

You'd be surprised, raising capital with no experience is actually more doable than you think.

In lieu of house hacking, or any other strategy is the below doable?

@Suzanne Chan light fixtures are doable, doors should be doable but can be finicky if one house or the other isn't perfectly square and the door rubs, with solid doors this can be corrected with most interior doors it can't. 

Point being, it's doable if you have your processes in place.

It is not something to be entered into lightly since it is complex, but if your hire the right professionals, it is definitely doable and the upside is much higher than what you see with purchasing a house that is already constructed, not to mention the ability to tailor the home to your desired buyer or renter profile.
