that X argument does not work when your talking such large incomes.. although that could change with the new tax laws .. we will have to see.but in the past  if your knocking down 30k a month  ( nice family income for sure.) and you have a 1.5 mil mortgage at todays rates that's a mortgage payment still of only 10 to 11k a month with taxs and insurance that still leaves you with 15k plus a month to buy groceries.I posit that it was tougher in my day with a 40k income and a 100k house  wifes basically were not in the work force as much and if they were it was not high paying.. ( reality of the day) interest rates in those days and we are talking late 70s  were 9 to 10% not 3 to 4 like today.. but it still worked you could be all in on a home for 1200 a month or so.. and remember houses cost the same in Rochester New York in the day as they did in Cupertino..
