It's about 2" of fiberglass board for the rigid ducts and about the same 2" fiberglass but more like a batt insulation sandwiched between the inner and outer plastic of the duct itself.

if you get around to doing demo on the walls you must consider using containment (plastic barriers) to prevent the spread of spores all through the basement.Carefully and slowly cutting small pieces of damaged wallboard is safer than hitting it with a hammer or breaking out large pieces.The EPA has a great guide document on doing it yourself vs. using outside contractors.You are right.

I might try to spray paint the light fixtures and door knobs.I'm not skilled enough to remove all of the facuets without damaging them, but might try to concoct some way to spray paint then with plastic bags to protect what I don't want painted (the sink).
