Lawyer advised I can't serve them myself of course since I'm plaintiff so just ask any friend or acquaintance to do so, doesn't have to be a licensed process server.

You may be the first.That being said, tucking it in a door, putting it THROUGH a mail slot that is actually cut in the door, or putting it in their newspaper delivery box is more effective than using a mailbox and doesn't break any laws.However, hand delivery is very time consuming and expensive and probably not incrementally that much better than a mailing.
