They now have less money to pay the rent because of job layoffs or cut backs and now cannot stimulate the local businesses as much with their incomes.I tend to find more affluent areas even if they have a layoff with a down turn have built up significant reserves to live on.

I wanted to steer clear of STR because all the AirBnB laws keep changing, and with economic slow down and layoffs in tech sectors which is an area of extreme disposable income to travel etc, it just feels like the wrong time for me personally to invest in an area where discretionary travel is likely to be the first to go from people's budgets as they tighten their household budgets.

I wish I had had mentors back then because I probably would have made a better decision at that time.I left LA in 2010 after a series of short, high-stress jobs and the 2nd set of layoffs I experienced in a 2 year timeframe  -- the first one occurring at the beginning of 2009 during the global financial crisis, the second one occurring a year later at a very well-known media/tech company that has since shuttered.
